My Letter To The Cleveland Indians

Dear Cleveland Indians,

I know you lost yesterday, & the day before. It doesn’t matter to me as much as what has been going on. Was it possibly because you had other things on your mind? I sure did. I’m sure you were quite a bit distracted the last two days with the trades of Ryan, Cliff Lee, Bennie, & even Raffy. Ryan was a shock, but I could almost understand that. So was Raffy, but same story there. Cliff Lee & Bennie?! That was totally a huge shock. Personally? I think Mark Shapiro is crazy. Even Cliff Lee seems to agree, “As a fan, it’s hard to feel good about that,” Lee said. “Losing one Cy Young winner one year and another one the very next year is probably hard for a fan to swallow. It’s the nature of the game. It’s something you should really talk to [GM Mark] Shapiro about. What his outlook was, what his intent was. Obviously, he felt he was making the team better with this move. I’m not going to grade it, approve or disapprove. It’s my job to pitch. I just got traded and I’ve got to pitch for a new team.” Yeah, it is hard. It’s been hard ever since that stupid trading deadline stuff started. I’ve heard other Tribe fans talking about it, & they are quite upset. It’s like Mark is saying, “Hey! I’m so excited! I traded Cliff Lee & Bennie for some ice cream!!” ..That’s not cool. It’s also like the team is completely giving up. Yes, the rebuilding period has started. Wonderful. Saying “rebuilding” is supposed to make it feel easier? Happier? It doesn’t make it sound like a wonderful walk in the park. Just saying.. if it were up to me, I would fire Mark & Eric by at least the end of the season. Unfortunately, it’s not my decision, as I am just a 15 year old girl. Now that Cliff & Ben are gone, who is next? “It’s turned into an ax house around here,” said rookie outfielder Chris Gimenez. “We had Gark, Raffie Betancourt and Benny and Cliff. It’s tough. You get to know all these guys. You wish them the best, but it’s tough to see them go. In a sense, it’s a new beginning. We’re getting some young guys in here who can step it up and see what we have for a future.” Axe house is right. I got to hand it to you, Chris, that’s a good description.

Could Victor be the next to go? I swear, if he is..I will lose it. Victor Martinez is everything to our team. He’s basically our remaining All-Star, he’s a leader, he’s a good player, he’s a nice guy. I have heard so many trade rumors about it, about him leaving. Just to make it VERY clear. He shouldn’t be going anywhere. I have asked myself, “Why does it seem like we are giving up on next season before it starts?” Now I am telling you, Cleveland Indians, dont give up. ( Mark Shapiro, be a little smarter, would you?! ) All you players, get out there & be strong. Fight every day, & try your best no matter what’s happening. Be agressive, be proud to be where you are in life. Meanwhile, I will try to do the same. I will try to look on the positive side, & never give up on you. As a matter of fact, I would never give up on you. I dont care who does, I wont. I dont care if some Yankees fan wearing a Yankees jersey stares me down because I’m wearing a Tribe shirt. (It’s happened, it was sort of creepy ) I dont care if a Phillies fan torments me, saying that Cliff Lee is definetely going to Philly, even before the trade took place. I really, DO NOT CARE if a Red Sox fan calls this team a joke. You know why? Cause you are not. Keep fighting, believe in yourself, & show the world what you can do. What you can be. Grady, even if you end up leaving within the years to come, you will still be my hero. No matter where you go, it will always be the same. To all the players, I listen/watch you every day, unless it’s an off-day. Or, of course, off season. I feel hurt when players get traded, just like you do. I am there when you win, & I feel the joy of it along with all of you. I’m there when you have a bad game, & I swallow my pride & look forward to the next game, hoping to feel that familiar satisfied feeling of a solid win. I’m there when fans of other teams chime in & say what they think, which sometimes isn’t such a good thing to say. I’m always there, & always will be. No matter what, I will always be a fan of the Cleveland Indians. Good luck, & keep fighting. I believe in every single one of you.

Until Next Time..

Wow, this is EXACTLY how I feel. My mom actually thought I wrote this, that’s how close it is to how I feel.

Great letter — switching around players and team names, this pretty much summarizes what I felt like last year about this time…and it’s probably true for any other fan when their team “cleans house” like this. But like a true fan, you still support them, even when they hurt you, because that’s really all you can do.

  3. raysfanboy

I’ll admit to liking ice cream, but not THAT much! Moving Lee was a mistake. You have to have that guy in the rotation who you can build on. That guy who you can depend on to end a losing streak. You just lost that guy.

More than likely you’ll keep Victor now. He was going to be too costly for the Rays (to get and to keep) and I think alot of other teams will feel the same way. So at least you get to keep some of your fan faves.

Every now and again I come across something that I wish I’d written. This post is a perfect example. The passion you convey is what I strive for when I write! Keep up the good work!

Well i think it’s safe to say you
You previously wrote in a message that it would be insane to trade Victor, who took it very hard. Hopefully the guys that we got in return pan out because pitching has been a HUGE disaster. Best of luck to Victor, Cliff, Ben, Ryan and Rafeal. I am hoping for a Phillies, redsox world series this post-season.

Looks like the Indians were sellers after all. I do not like the Indians giving up their good players at all. I hope the Indians have a better season next year. This is a strange year for the tribe.

Nicely put, tribechick. After hearing about Victor Martinez you guy must be pretty upset. It seems like they got rid of so many difference makers over there in Cleveland. I hope the three guys you got for Martinez come in and produce for you guys. I’d hate to see you get the short end of the stick. But, as I’m sure you will, keep on keepin’ on!

I am so sorry. When I heard that Victor got traded, I thought about you. I also heard on Twitter that there is an upcoming bobblehead scheduled for Victor. Those things get planned well in advanced so at the time, I believe they did not know you would not have Victor with you guys. I hope things in baseball do improve.

im anticipating your next entry too. with victor gone im sure youve fliiped the freak out. but hey your in the same boat as the pirates. there needs to be a change andyour better set up for the future now. it hurts but Cliff is right “its the nature of the game.”

  10. chisoxchatter

I’m sorry you guys lost Victor. I saw him crying when he talked to the media, that’s tough. I’m kind of surprised you guys started trading players, but the team has been underachieving (though they still seem to have a lot of confidence in Wedge)

Thanks for the help tonight though!

Ashley, I wish all fans had the same passion for their teams! I can’t imagine what it’s like to go from spring training when the Tribe was picked as a contender to now have some the best players taken away from your team. It must be like a bad dream. The good news is that while you lost Victor Martinez, you did gain Justin Masterson, one of the most beloved members of the young Red Sox squad. I guarantee you the guy is going to flourish as a starter for your team. He has been bounced between the rotation and the pen here–somewhat unfairly, I think, for a developing starter–but Mark Shapiro plans to use him immediately as an everyday starter and that’s good news for Justin and for the Indians fans.

Great letter. I can’t imagine the hurt you must be feeling. I live here in Ohio and have many friends that are Indians fans, and they are all stunned and in a state of depression. Keep up your passion for the Tribe. It will turn around someday.

  13. devilabrit

by now you must be really devastated, but don’t give up on them, I thinkthey will be back, they have good talent and may suprise everyone next year, hell they had a good win last night….. BTW, Cliff Lee put on one hell of a show last night in his 1st NL start….

Wow-you expressed all my sentiments in that letter! It is like Shapiro is saying-hey be excited! I traded Cliff Lee for a pile of paper clips! It’s awesome! Also losing Benny and Garko…honestly there is nothing I hate more than rebuilding!:( The Browns did it this year and now another one of my teams has to do it too!!! UGH!!! And I agree that we are giving up on next season before it’s even started..Throwing in the towel already on 2010-that’s a great mentality Shapiro! But I still love this team…and I will never stop!
